We are RGU's student debating society. Set up in mid 2006 and had a great first year, being named New Society of the Year at the 2007 Scarlet & Gold Awards. This followed our participation in a number of Scottish debating competitions, a student forum on accomodation and our first guest speaker debate featuring a number of local MSPs. We meet on Mondays and Thursdays, 7-9pm in A12, St Andrew St. Any student at RGU is welcome to come to their first debate for free! For more information, email

At the recent Scarlet and Gold awards the society did overwhelmingly well winning 3 half scarlets, 2 full scarlets and the society of the year award! This is a testament to the hard work and dedication displayed by everyone over the course of the 08/09 academic year. Over the course of this year we have attended more external events than ever before. This started with the SSDC's annual Pro-am competition followed closely by Bogwall the annual maiden speakers competition. The highlight of first semester was the St Andrews Day debate hosted at The Scottish Parliament which is fast becoming a staple of the circuit. Second semester was IV season where we attended several competitions hosted at other Universities including Edinburgh, St Andrews and Aberdeen. Looking internally we hosted our third annual guest speaker competition where a collection of politicians were invited along to discuss matters in a "question time" format. It was dissapointing that our annual open competition did not occur this year - but this merely leaves some room for improvement next year! |

Debating is always good fun... But is more so when at the taxpayers expense! RGU sent two teams and two judges to a debate hosted by The Scottish Government at the Parliament itself with 3 rounds and a final hosted in the debating chamber where your MSP helps to decide the future of the nation. The competition consisted of teams from 8 Universities debating motions such as "This House Believes Priests should be compelled to reveal details of confessions in criminal trials" and "This House Would put cultural values before Animal Rights". While our teams (RGU A: Michael Hutchison and Craig Donald, RGU B: Ciaran Rooney and Andrew Emslie) failed to break into the final we very pleased with the view as we watched a top class debate from the comfort of the parliamentary chamber in a debate chaired by the Presiding Officer himself as well as other very important dignitaries and MSP's. A number of contributions were made by members of the society in the floor debate.

RGU: Voice attended Bogwall the annual SSDC maiden speaker competition on the 15th of November which this year was hosted by St Andrews University which ended with a final debating the motion "This House Would reintroduce duelling to the death". RGU A was comprised of Craig Donald and Stephanie Harris while RGU B consisted of Ciaran Rooney and Eleanor Sutton in their first debating competition with Henning Stock as part of a dummy team. Vice-President Michael Hutchison was also present as a judge. A great time was had by all - as I'm sure the photos will attest!

We meet every Monday and Thursday between 7pm and 9pm in the St. Andrew Street building and will be holding our first meeting of the 2008/2009 year on Monday 29 September 2008 in room A12. So please do come along to find out more about the society, what we do and how you can get involved with the society should you wish to. We have lots of great things planned for the year and hope that you’ll want to be part of it! If you have any questions you can contact the president (Alistair) on
