Freshers 08 PDF Print E-mail

The new academic year has now begun with a fantastic Freshers’ week (as always).  RGU Voice was present at the Freshers’ Fayre and a number of people indicated their interest in joining our society.

We meet every Monday and Thursday between 7pm and 9pm in the St. Andrew Street building and will be holding our first meeting of the 2008/2009 year on Monday 29 September 2008 in room A12.

So please do come along to find out more about the society, what we do and how you can get involved with the society should you wish to.  We have lots of great things planned for the year and hope that you’ll want to be part of it!

On Friday 1 August 2008 the new RGU Voice committee took office.  Thanks to all those who worked hard last year, it was a fairly successful year!

Granite Gavel PDF Print E-mail
On 29 April AU Debator hosted the inaugural Granite Gavel debating competition in which two debating teams from each Aberdeen university (i.e. The University of Aberdeen and The Robert Gordon University) compete to win a debating gavel donated by Mr Ross MacDonald, formerly of AU Debater.

The motion selected was “This House Would Castrate Sex Offenders”. Graham Bruno was in the chair and the judges were Aissa Watson, Gemma Smith and Alastair Sloan.

The Placings Were
1st Prop (UOA) - Alastair Kerr & Iain O’Neil
1st Opp (RGU) - Sandy Brownlee & Liam Smith
2nd Prop (RGU) - Michael Hutison & Henning Stock
2nd Opp (UOA) - Karen Reid & Alex Critchley

Congratuations to Karen and Alex as the winning team; the judges also made special mention of Sandy’s speech as the strongest outside the winning team and congratulated Liam Smith on making his maiden competitive speech!

It was a great night and hopefully the start of an bit of annual friendly rivalry between the two universities!

AGM 2008 PDF Print E-mail

Last night we held our society AGM. We approved some changes to the society constitution, the new version of which is now online here and effective immediately:

  • We are now officially RGU Voice - Debating Society
  • We now have to hold the RGU Open once a year, and have a committee member dedicated to running it
  • We can now affiliate to any debating related bodies
  • A number of small changes to the running of our committee

We also held an election for next year's committee - transfer to the new committee will take place on 1st August - and decided on a number of things the society should focus on next year. Minutes will follow shortly.
